La Salud Medical Center offers DOT exam services. Call us today to set an appointment so you can get the requirements you need.

What Is the DOT Exam?

The DOT exam is a physical exam required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for commercial vehicle drivers. Passing this exam is necessary to ensure that those going behind the wheel are indeed physically, mentally, and emotionally fit for the job.

Beyond having the capacity to operate commercial vehicles, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) also requires the DOT exam to ensure public safety.

Do You Need a DOT Physical?

You will be required to get and pass a DOT physical exam if you meet the following requirements:

  • Drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 15 passengers
  • Paid to drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 8 passengers
  • Drive a vehicle carrying hazardous materials; said vehicle must have a placard notifying of its contents
  • Drive a vehicle on the interstate with over 10,000 pounds of gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight rating, or gross combination weight.

What To Expect in a DOT Physical

When coming to your DOT physical exam at La Salud Medical Center, you can expect your doctor to inquire about your medical history. They’ll ask for basic information about you, such as your surgical history, any medication that you’re taking, history of substance use and abuse, other general health issues, and more.

Once your medical history is covered, you will then go through a hands-on physical, including your general vital statistics, genital and urinary system, nervous system, circulatory system, and others.

Disqualifying Conditions

If you are found to have certain conditions that can potentially put your driving capabilities at risk, you may be given failing marks in your DOT physical exam. Among these conditions are:

  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Heart conditions
  • Meniere’s disease (inner ear disorder causing dizziness)
  • Uncontrolled diabetes/ high blood pressure
  • Hearing or vision loss that can’t be corrected
  • Protein in urine that may be indicative of kidney disease
  • And others

Depending on your condition, the disqualification may only be temporary until you get things under control. Once you do, it’s possible to reapply for certification. In certain cases, it will be left up to the judgment of the medical examiner whether to give you a pass or fail mark.
